A safer Anganwadi, and more than 25 children

Pappampatti, Coimbatore district

A compound wall at a roadside Anganwadi in Pappampatti gave parents the confidence to send their children, and enrolment rose from 8–10 to more than 25.

The Anganwadi centre in Pappampatti stood beside a main road with no compound wall. Parents were afraid for their children's safety, and only around 8–10 children were attending.

Under the Aarogya Aarambham initiative of the Vazhvizhi Project Phase I, Native Medicare Charitable Trust, with the support of Walkaroo Foundation, built a compound wall around the centre.

The safer, more welcoming space gave parents the confidence to send their children, and enrolment rose to more than 25.

It shows how a simple piece of infrastructure can answer a community's concerns, strengthen parents' confidence and widen access to early childhood education.
