Seventeen years of murukku, and the loan that grew it

By Mrs. Amutha, Coimbatore

A family snack business, a Self-Help Group loan through the Vimukta Federation, and a steadier enterprise.

At 36, Mrs. Amutha exemplifies resilience and entrepreneurial strength. Educated up to the 10th grade, she was initially engaged in agriculture with her family before relocating to Coimbatore. After marriage, she joined her husband’s family business specializing in the preparation of the traditional Indian snack, murukku, where she has played a vital role in its growth and management for over 17 years.

The family enterprise currently generates a steady monthly income of ₹30,000, enabling Amutha to earn a personal income of ₹10,000 and support her household needs. Determined to expand the business further, she took a progressive step by availing a loan through her Self-Help Group from the Vimukta Federation, an initiative of Native Medicare Charitable Trust (NMCT).

This financial support strengthened her production capacity, improved business stability, and enhanced her confidence as an entrepreneur. Today, Amutha stands as a role model of perseverance and self-reliance, demonstrating how access to financial opportunities and community support can empower women to strengthen family livelihoods and build sustainable enterprises.
