Two cows, and a steady ₹10,200 a month
Velangoor, Devarshola, The Nilgiris
At 60, Ammu from Velangoor swapped unpredictable daily wage work for a dairy enterprise supplying the Nellakottai Milk Cooperative.
Ammu, a 60-year-old from Velangoor in Devarshola, used to depend on strenuous daily wage labour with unpredictable pay. Under the Integrated Tribal Development Programme, implemented by NMCT with support from NABARD, he received two milch cows to start a dairy enterprise.
He now supplies 12 litres of milk a day to the Nellakottai Milk Cooperative Society. At ₹45 a litre that brings in ₹16,200 a month, plus ₹1,000 from selling organic dung. After about ₹6,000 a month on cattle feed, fodder and animal health, he keeps a steady profit of ₹10,200 a month.
From an overburdened daily labourer, Ammu has become a successful senior entrepreneur, with the financial stability to secure health care for his family.
