NMCT has established Abhaya Students Shelter in 2008, with a vision to support, bringing up and educating helpless girl children and making them self reliant.
Abhaya Students Shelter is located in Kalappanaickenpalayam village near Kanuvai in Coimbatore District. The home was started initially with 15 orphaned / semi orphaned girl children. The shelter currently supports 24 girls with the mission of assisting families in need by providing a safe home like setting for the destitute children until they are reunited with their families.
The poor and needy girl children who can’t afford for schooling or access to schools are admitted in the Abhaya Students Shelter and mainstreamed in the nearby Government Schools, industrial training institute and Polytechnic Colleges.
Bethammal's family background is extremely meagre. Her parents are both illiterate. During her childhood the family moved around to sell handicrafts made by her father, so their living place was just a tent. For the children's education they later settled in Coimbatore and established themselves a small thatched hut. Bethammal dropped out of school before she had completed her 5th standard and was about to work as a child labour in the construction field.
The NMCT identified her and admitted in Abhaya in 2008 and it gave her the chance to continue her studies. Abhaya home took care for higher studies upto completing the Nursing course. Now she is the Warden and Nurse taking care of the Abhaya home and children.
